Wales & West Region ATC mark 75th Anniversary with a Star Studded Dinner

On Friday 17th April Wales & West Region held their ATC 75th Anniversary Dinner in the Officers’ Mess at RAF Shawbury. Music was provided by Cadets from the West Mercian Wing Concert Band and staff past and present from across the Region were joined by The Guest of Honour Air Chief Marshal Sir Joe French the last CinC of Strike Command, AOC 22 Trg Gp Air Vice Marshal Andrew Turner, Air Vice Marshal Mike Smart the Hon President of West Mercian Wing ATC and Gp Capt Jason Appleton the Station Commander

The event also marked the dining out of the Regional Commandant Group Captain Dick Allen who after just short of ten years in the role retires at the end of June. To mark this notable milestone Air Chief Marshal Sir John Day, Air Marshal Sir Timothy Jenner, Air Vice Marshal Tony Nicholson and Air Vice Marshal David Niven who had trained and served with the Rgl Comdt were invited to surprise him.

3 of these guests were on the same course at RAF Tern Hill in the late 1960s and following a delve in the archives a photo of No 100 Basic Course was found. Mr Dave Forshaw the Stn photographer recreated this photo in the foyer of the Mess to bring it up to date.

All the usual Mess traditions were observed although given the distinguished company there were not many fines for misbehaviour and the mess staff once again provided a superb meal.

Wg Cdr Andy Griffin OC West Mercian Wing who acted as PMC for the dinner commented, “it was a truly memorable evening to mark not only the ATC’s anniversary but also to dine out our Rgl Comdt. To dine with such distinguished company was a privilege, it was a fitting way to celebrate the service of an extraordinary man”.
